Bonfoi Estate is a family-owned boutique wine estate with a rich history dating back to 1699, making it one of Stellenbosch’s oldest wine farms. The estate’s name ‘Bonfoi’, meaning ‘Good Faith’ in French, originates from the early eighteenth century when two French ladies owned the farm. Originally named ‘Aan den Weg’ after the road that joined Cape Town and Stellenbosch, the farm was given to Jan van Reede by Governor W.A. van der Stel. Over the centuries, the property changed hands several times through various families including the Jouberts and Le Granges, until Johannes van der Westhuizen, who had worked on the farm, purchased it and established it as the wine estate it is today. His sons Christoff and George took over, and Christoff’s son has kept the family’s winemaking traditions alive. Johannes van der Westhuizen, the current owner and winemaker, uses his extensive viticulture and viniculture knowledge and skills to integrate exceptional high-quality grapes with fine winemaking facilities to ensure superior quality wines. The estate spans 82 hectares with a production of approximately 800 tons and 1,000 cases annually. The newly renovated tasting facility is housed in the historic 1820 cellar building, offering a charming and intimate atmosphere. Some of Bonfoi’s most prestigious wines are exclusive to the tasting room. The estate has become known as a hidden gem in Stellenbosch, featuring a charming tasting room in an old building with friendly assistants and surprisingly well-priced wines. Located in the Stellenboschkloof area, Bonfoi Estate produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, as well as their acclaimed Ouverture blend. The estate offers walking trails and a conservation area, allowing visitors to bring their own picnics and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings.
