High Constantia Winery is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the Constantia Valley, established in 1693 as part of the Dutch East India Company outpost and originally known as Wittebomen, named for the Silverleaf trees on the property. The estate is expertly managed by David van Niekerk. Located just five kilometers from the ocean, the vineyards are situated at high altitude benefiting from refreshing sea breezes, with the region’s rainfall and temperature creating perfect conditions for grape cultivation. The estate has a capacity of 100 tonnes and all grapes are handpicked by dedicated workers. The excellent water retention of the soil plays a crucial role in nurturing vines. High Constantia cultivates Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc, with finest grapes selected for premium red, white, and sparkling wines. The winery is tucked away down a short driveway alongside a residential home, with tastings in what looks like a converted garage. As you navigate past the pupitre, tanks and hoses, you discover a small verandah overlooking a charming garden, dam and the Schoenstadt nunnery. The wonderful Sannaline runs tasting experiences with warmth and expertise, making this many visitors’ absolute favorite spot in Constantia. Wines available include Clos Andre Cap Classique, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Sebastiaan blend, and various aged vintages. The boutique winery has a real hands-on feel and often has older red wines available to taste and purchase – a rarity. High Constantia is the odd one out on the Constantia Wine Route, operating more like a winemaker hobbyist’s dream than commercial wine tourism, which creates an intimate, personal experience.
