Tokara is a family-owned wine estate perched high on the Helshoogte Pass in Stellenbosch, offering one of the most spectacular settings in the Cape Winelands.
Founded in 1994 by GT and Anne-Marie Ferreira, the estate takes its name from their children, Thomas and Kara.
The farm forms the watershed between two beautiful valleys on the foothills of the majestic Simonsberg, providing dramatic views across Stellenbosch to False Bay and Table Mountain in the distance.
The estate rests on the Stellenbosch side of the Banghoek Valley, between 350m and 550m above sea level, with vineyards planted on decomposed granite and weathered sandstone soils that lend structure, perfume and longevity to the wines.
Tokara is celebrated for producing world-class wines across three ranges: Tokara Collection (everyday drinking), Tokara Reserve (expressing unique terroir), and the flagship Directors Reserve Collection featuring outstanding red and white blends, plus an exquisite Cap Classique and XO Brandy.
The estate is particularly lauded for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, with grapes sourced from estate vineyards and cool-climate Elgin.
Tokara was a pioneer of Winelands dining, opening one of the first winery restaurants in the region.
Today, visitors can experience fine dining at Tokara Restaurant under Chef Carolize Coetzee (2020 JHP Gourmet Guide’s Haute Performance Award winner), or more casual fare at the Tokara Delicatessen featuring wood-fired pizzas and seasonal bistro cuisine.
The estate also produces award-winning cold-pressed olive oils from mature Tuscan olive varieties, and features an impressive art collection including William Kentridge tapestries in the restaurant and a sculpture garden with peacocks wandering among the installations.
